  Music is the movement of sound to reach the soul

Teaching Philosophy

Fostering and nurturing the natural abilities of each student is a core principle.  Students learn in an emotionally safe, fun and disciplined environment.  They are free to express who they really are and are encouraged to be the best they can be by being taught with kindness, patience, honesty and, of course, musicianship.  Mary Jo also continues her own learning process by taking piano lessons and performing regularly, which is an inherent part of her desire to be the best teacher she can be.  Naturally through her own practice, she is continually evolving her musicianship. This enables her to better mold/adapt lessons to her individual students’ needs, for she understands the ‘student experience’ as well.

Technique & Approach

Rote learning, multi-key playing, technic, theory, and various method book instructions.  Students are encouraged to learn what is recommended but they are also free to select the music they’ll enjoy playing.  It is not a strict atmosphere, yet they are taught with discipline and good practice habits. Music specialties that are taught include Classical and Contemporary (Pop, Broadway, Jazz, Blues and Ragtime).

Additionally, I encourage families who own an Apple iPad to use different iPad apps such as Piano Maestro by JoyTunes.  Apps help students strengthen core skills learned in lessons during their home practice. Piano Maestro is an engaging app that strengthens students' sight-reading ability and rhythm, while motivating students to have fun.

Benefits of Playing Music

Benefits of Playing Music

In recent years, the rate at which scientists have been studying the intellectual benefits of learning and performing music in children and adults has increased exponentially. Though many people are still skeptical, there are many who believe the benefits exist and are plentiful! Scientists have said that studying music can:

    * improve standardized test scores as well as reading proficiency

    * increase mathematical and scientific aptitudes

    * increase self-esteem

    * increase emotional health

    * and increase the brain's neuroplasticity - ability to adapt and change.

These benefits arise from the fact that learning music requires the brain to read and interpret musical notes, move both hands and all ten fingers. "Music training has wide ranging effects in many capacities related to perception, performance, and language with increases in brain efficiency..." - Dr. Jon Lieff, neuropsychiatrist.
